Have you seen the Hollywood movie 2012? It was a big success and the credit goes to its theme that refers to the concept of end of the world. After the release, people seriously started to think about it whether it is going to be true or otherwise. There are a number of people who thought that it was going to be a reality and that 2012 is the last year of everyone’s life on the earth planet. Media, researchers, physicists, astronomers, philosophers and astrologists became preoccupied in exploring the facts. Nevertheless, the annoyingly persistent question in everyone’s mind was, was it inevitable? What different studies reveal about it? There are different speculations and theories from various social groups and civilizations.

Many civilizations have mutual social norms, common traits and shared values. There are uniquely diverse civilizations in the world with equally unique set of beliefs and values. Among them, one is Maya civilization. Maya civilization has a close link to the agricultural civilization. It was famous for astrological predictions. People of Maya used to record their findings on the rocks. Long Count Calendar was the result of their studies. This calendar started from 11th August 3114 and strangely it ended on 12-12-2012. Some people consider it as an authentic evidence to support their beliefs whereas the truth lies far removed from their vague speculations. Mayans have only been able to calculate the calendar till 2012 but that does not necessarily mean the world will surely end by the end of their calendar.
If we carefully analyze five major religion of the world, we get a different picture.
All the divine religions believe that one day the world has to come to an end. Islam, Christianity and Judaism subscribe to the idea that it is the God and God alone knows when the final hour will come. Hindus and Buddhists believe that “God Maha Kalip will certainly destroy this world one day but nobody claims to know about the exact date or time.
“Last Three Minutes”, a book written by Paul Davis in 1994, which first pinpointed the date of doomsday. According to that book the world will end in 2126, when a Swift Turtle star will strike the world with all its might.
Nostradamus was a famous astrologist, who was also very popular for his poetry. His quatrain predicted about the World War one and two and they appeared to be true. He also predicted about some leader such as Hitler and Napoleon who would have huge impact on the world history. Nostradamus and Maya civilization both emphasized that the world will come to an end after completing its 26,000 years. And those years will be completed on 21-12-2012.
Different societies, tribes, sects, religions and civilizations believe on the doomsday but in profoundly different ways but none has the authentic information as to when it may happen. It’s only about wrong speculations and misbelieves of different people from the distant past. As for now, we are absolutely sure that the world will not end in 2012.
