Everyone knows what is earthquake. It is the sudden shaking or movement of the earth. Scientifically earthquake is caused when plates move along the fault lines in the earth’s crust. When these plates or huge rocks break or slip, they release energy, which causes the crust to move resulting in an earthquake.
Earthquake is one of the most deadly natural disasters but unfortunately, like other natural disasters the occurrence of earthquake cannot be predicted with accuracy. It occurs suddenly and gives very less time for making safety arrangements. Earthquake can also trigger other natural hazards like flooding, land sliding and fire. An earthquake mostly occurs in areas, which are close to the joints of the earth’s tectonic plates.
Earthquake Facts
- The magnitude of an earthquake is measured by using Seismometers. There is no destruction if Seismometer gives the reading of 3 magnitudes and earthquake at that magnitude is not even felt. The magnitude higher than 6 is destructive and causes a lot of damage.
- The largest earthquake ever recorded was on 22nd May 1960 in Chile. The magnitude of this earthquake was 9.5.
- The most destructive earthquake ever recorded was on 23rd January 1556 in Shaanxi China when approximately 825,000 people died. The magnitude of this earthquake was 8.0.
- About 10,000 people die because of earthquake annually.
Safety Measures
If an earthquake warning is announced in your area than mentally prepare yourself for it. Follow the government instructions strictly. It is also a good idea to identify safe places in your house and quickly move to them if earthquake strikes suddenly. If you live in a weak building with higher occupancy than it is strongly recommended to move to the camps installed by government as safety measures against earthquake.
Unfortunately there is no way to avoid earthquakes, if it is meant to come it will come and it cannot be stopped in any way. But we can take some safety measures to minimize the destruction causes by the earthquake. If an earthquake occurs when you are indoor than don’t make the mistake of running out of the building. Most people lose their life just because they tend to run out from the building into an open space and in the process a heavy object falls on them and they lose a life. Just stay inside and take cover against some heavy object like furniture or against the wall. If you are outside when an earthquake occurs than run away from building and street lights to an open land, once you reach there than stay there until the shaking stops. If you are driving then stay in the vehicle then drive it slowly to an open area and stay in the vehicle until the shaking stops.
